IT in The Academy
The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management – Taking the lead in information technology.
Being an industry leader in the use of information technology in an educational environment has been one of the core objectives of The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management. Since its opening in October 2001, The Academy has proven to be a technology showcase for the hospitality industry.
Industry leaders and recruiters have identified the increased need for business school graduates to possess excellent skills in the use of information technology. To provide students with these skills, the Academy's students are exposed from day one of their studies to information technology systems that can be found in the world’s finest hospitality organizations.
The Academy students are not expected to become IT Managers, but they are trained to use information technology optimally in a hospitality environment. In today’s global corporate world, IT is part of almost every business practice and it is for this reason the Academy has chosen to integrate IT in all courses, whether it is an accounting system in a financial management class, a point-of-sales system in a food service practicum or the latest e-commerce solutions in a marketing course.
IT Facilities at The Academy
A wide range of information technology facilities and services are available to students at The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management, from custom-made computer labs to multi-media PCs to high-speed wireless connections to the school’s network and Internet access.
The information technology facilities and services provided at The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management are designed to make the student’s life as efficient, effective and convenient as possible and therefore the integration of facilities and services is key.
They are provided with a single ID card that gives them access to their dormitories as well as to other student areas on campus. The same card also serves as a library ID card.
Mobility is also very important, as students and faculty need to have instant access to information wherever they are. All students are connected through a broadband wireless network covering most of the campus, including the student dormitories, pool area and club house. Through secure connections over the Internet, all networked resources are available via a high-end intranet portal. Services include e-mail, grade lookup, class schedules, course documents, announcements, discussions and complete online classes or components of classes.
Through strong partnerships with some of the world’s leaders in technology, The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management has access to the latest hardware, software and services for its students and faculty. To give a few examples, the Academy was the first educational institute in the world to use Microsoft’s Intranet portal and document management solution SharePoint Portal Server. The Academy was the first hospitality business school in the region to take its courses to the web and offer on-line learning for industry professionals and degree students to support their classroom courses.
