Sally McQuart, Lecturer

Sally is a Lecturer of Business and Managerial English Communications at the Academy. She began her career as an interpreter and trade promotion coordinator for the US Embassy Foreign Commercial Service in Paris, France, a position she held for eleven years before moving to Saudi Arabia, where she taught French at the International School (SAIS-R) in Riyadh. Sally holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Creative Writing from Lesley College in Boston, Massachusetts, and a teaching certification from Rutgers University, New Jersey. She is also a certified instructor for Berlitz schools, and a licensed guide through the Department of Tourism, Commerce and Marketing of Dubai.

Course Overview:

Whether writing a few lines for a flyer, a few paragraphs for a cover letter, or something much larger, good writing must captivate readers, engage them, and must get a response (create sales) or the company is losing business. This program has been designed to show how to create professional business correspondence that can persuade, bring understanding, and get results.


Target audience:

Any company employees who need to improve their writing correspondence skills.


Course Objectives:

To enable attendees to:
identify the purpose and objectives of their correspondence
structure the content for the greatest effect  
develop a good writing style
make the main point easy to find 
 

Course Outline:

I. Introduction to Effective Business Writing
·         How business writing differs from other forms of writing

II. Identifying the purpose and objectives
·         When to write a “yes” letter
·         When to write a “no” letter
·         When to write a “please do something” letter

III. Structuring the content
·         Direct approach
·         Indirect approach

IV. Developing a good writing style and the importance of the 4 Cs
·         Small words, big ideas
·         Crafting reader-centric correspondence – the “you” viewpoint
·         The problem of passive voice
·         Avoidance of pronoun usage, and disappearing fluency
·         Varying your tone according to your audience
·         Sentence structure – what is too long?
·         Introducing the 4 Cs

V. Make your point easy to find
·         Identifying the most read sentence in any document
·         The importance of the bottom line

VI.   Did you say what you mean?
·         Proofing your work – tricks to help you see what’s really there
 
Note: Materials for the workshop are designed to be interactive with (about) a 50/50 split between concept/theory and practical application of skills learned during the course. Participants will have the opportunity to gain techniques for the types of situations they deal with or expect to deal with.

Course Material

The course fee includes everything required for the class work including notebooks, articles, note-paper and pencils.


Prerequisites

Attendee must have a good command of spoken English.
 

Certification

Certificates will be presented upon completion of the course.

Instruction materials & refreshments are included in the course fee. Accommodation and transportation are not included in the "Course Fees".
